Hi Doug,

I love your calculators and website it is a wonderful wealth of information for horse owners.

In Hawaii we have what you would say is a combination of the two calculators though.

Most people board but have to provide their own feed and stall bedding. I think it is either what we call full board or boarding on your own property.

If you don't mind maybe you can update both with a misc. box to add to calculating the costs.

Thanks for sharing and hope to see you again real soon.

I'm really glad your experience worked out. We have 5 horses ourselves and have been pretty lucky too.

However, I think that it is important that anyone buying a horse is aware of the costs of properly keeping a horse. There are too many horses (especially in the current economic situation) being dumped because their owners can no longer afford them. Here is a good discussion of all the costs, plus two online horse cost calculators. I would suggest that anyone looking to buy a horse check this out first and make sure they are prepared for this level of long-term commitment: http://www.wowhorses.com/cost-of-a-horse.html

my first horse was fresh off the track and she was one of those "problem" horses. it was love at first sight for me and for her, i was walking by the stall and she nickered to me and that was it...i was in love..she was very head strong, very athletic and "hot" as a summer night. and i was green, very green... it took us a year until she finally gave in and let me be the lead mare. i was bucked off every lesson, at least three time. finally i learned to stay on during her temper tantrums. it was funny people would ask me which arena i was going to ride in and then they would ride in a different arena. i found out later that people at the stables had a bet on who was going to kill who first... she was quite a hand full, but i didn't care. i was young and in love.

after she let me lead, we were unstoppable, we won every event we entered, especially the speed classes. we enjoyed jumpers the most, nether on of us liked hunters much, but we did o.k in hunters but our true passion was jumpers.. we would win by 5 seconds...she was so fast! she taught me so much. she was my best friend and was alway there for me. my first love and you never forget your first love. i know i am a better person for having known her. she is now retired and lives on a farm in California. i miss her very much. horses are so special. i wish everyone could know the love of a horse. the world would be a better place.
